Weiser Medicaid Surgery claims reach $1,775 in 2024, marking 35% annual rise

Weiser Medicaid providers billed $1,775 in 2024 for Surgery services, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This was a 35.2% uptick compared to 2023, when providers submitted $1,313 in claims for the same category.

Medicaid, a public health insurance program managed by individual states and funded cooperatively by federal and state governments, provides coverage for low-income people and families, seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities, making it a central part of the U.S. health care framework.

Shifts in Medicaid billing amounts reveal how local public health care funding is distributed, since these payments stem from taxpayer sources.

The “Surgery” category groups Medicaid services based on their care type, organized using standardized HCPCS and CPT code groupings. For this analysis, each service code was cataloged under a single service category using predefined code prefixes and number ranges, which helped prevent overlapping and maintain consistent rankings over time.

While Medicaid expenditures rose in several categories, Surgery was the fifth-highest payment category in Weiser for 2024.

Statewide in Idaho, Surgery ranked 13th among all Medicaid service categories by total payment in 2024.

From 2019 through 2024, Medicaid payments associated with Surgery in Weiser climbed by $333, or 15.8%. Periods of the highest spending increases occurred in 2023 and 2022.

Most Surgery category payments were concentrated in a few ZIP codes throughout the city. In 2024, ZIP code 83672 saw $1,775 in Medicaid payments related to Surgery, representing 100% of the city’s total for that category that year.

Only a small group of specific billing codes within the Surgery category accounted for the majority of Medicaid payments in Weiser.

Surgery-related Medicaid payments in Weiser rose by 35.2% between 2024 and the prior year, outpacing the 9% change across all Medicaid billing categories in the city during this period.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, federal and state Medicaid spending collectively reached about $871.7 billion in fiscal 2023, making up roughly 18% of total U.S. health expenditures—an increase from $613.5 billion in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
